Command Sergeant Major of Special Operations Joint Task Force (Rt)

JR Cook began his distinguished military career in 1991 with assignments at Fort Lewis, Washington, and later at Fort Polk, Louisiana. In 1997, he completed the Special Forces Qualification Course and was subsequently assigned to the 3rd Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

In 2001, JR pursued a challenging path by joining a Special Missions Unit, where he advanced through the ranks as a team member, team leader, Troop Sergeant Major, and ultimately, the Unit Command Sergeant Major. In this role, he served as the Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Commander, providing guidance to subordinate commanders and staff officers while mentoring junior officers and NCOs. His tenure included multiple deployments focused on the defeat of ISIS.

Following his time with the Special Missions Unit, JR served as the Command Sergeant Major for the Special Operations Joint Task Force OIR/ Levant in Baghdad, Iraq. This year—long assignment encompassed five Middle Eastern countries, where he acted as the senior enlisted leader and primary advisor to the commanding general, overseeing all combat operations and training with host nation service members.

Over his 33-year career, JR earned numerous accolades including Airborne Jumpmaster, Ranger Tab, Military Freefall Jumpmaster, Combat Scuba Diver, DOD High Risk Survival Qualification, Advanced Land Navigation, and Sniper School, among others. He retired from the military on September 1, 2023, and returned to his hometown in North Carolina, driven by his desire to continue to serve by using his skill set to enhance law enforcement efforts.

Now a full-sworn, credentialed Deputy Sheriff in multiple jurisdictions, JR travels the country leading

the fight against human trafficking and exploitation, with a primary focus on combating the trafficking of minors — dedicating his life to helping the least of these.

R is a follower of Jesus and serves as a deacon in his local church. He married his wife, Cindy, in

September 1994. They have two daughters, Katie and Jamie, and are enjoying time on their farm in Carthage, North Carolina.
